After last year's successful Wales Velothon ride we were wondering what we could do this year for our charity ride.

Andy and myself (Mike) had been discussing this for a couple of weeks and we came up with a few options for this year's challenge.

  1. Ride the Wales Velothon again.

  2. Ride from John O'Groats to Lands' End

  3. Ride from North to South Wales starting at Caernarfon Castle and finishing at Cardiff Castle.

Andy also wanted to do the ride around his birthday (big one) which is in September. After looking at all the options we ruled out the Wales Velothon as this is taking place on the 22nd May, we also ruled out John O'Groats to Lands' End as this was over 9 days and would cost us over £2000.

As we want to raise as much money as possible for charity we decided we would organise our own ride from North to South Wales to take place in September.

After deciding on the challenge we sent an email around to see who would like to do the challenge with us. Apart from Andy and myself we will be joined by Lara (who did the Velothon with us) and Iain Mossman. Next was deciding the route we were going to take. Andy, Iain and myself all came up with routes and we decided which one was the best to take. As it turns out we are taking the longest route with the most climbing but it is also on quieter roads.

We have now managed to sort out our overnight accommodation for the challenge. We are stopping in Caernarfon on the first night before we start our ride and in Llanbister for our overnight stop before starting day two. We have also managed to sort out a support vehicle for the ride which will be carrying all our clothes and equipment while we cycle.

So this year's charity ride/challenge will be to ride from North to South Wales over two days in September.

Day One (September 16) will see us set out from Caernarfon Castle heading out through the Snowdonia National Park to Bala, Lake Vyrnwy, Newtown and to our overnight stop in Llanbister. The ride on day one is about 165km.

Day Two (September 17) will see us set out from our overnight stop in Llanbister and head towards Llandrindod Wells, Builth Wells, Brecon through the Brecon Beacons and onto our final destination outside Cardiff Castle. The ride on day two will be about 125km.

This year I have chosen to ride for Mind and if you would like to support me in my efforts please click on the mind logo below or go to http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/MikeShevyn all donations will be appreciated and help a really good cause.

Mind is a mental health charity in England and Wales.

Mind offers information and advice to people with mental health problems and lobbies government and local authorities on their behalf. It also works to raise public awareness and understanding of issues relating to mental health.

Look out for our training adventures in our next blog ......................
